Company History
Crowd Management Services – CMS – was founded in January 1979 to provide peer group security for rock concerts and festivals in Oregon. CMS was Portland Memorial Coliseum’s exclusive security vendor for all rock shows and helped to develop new crowd management procedures.
With an innovative approach to crowd management, CMS grew rapidly in the early 1980s. The first regional office opened in Spokane when, in 1980, CMS became the service partner at the Spokane Center and the Spokane Coliseum. We expanded to include guest services, traffic and parking operations, and alcoholic beverage enforcement. By 1990, CMS managed the majority of crowd events and venues in Oregon and Washington through five regional offices.
Starplex Corporation was created in 1986 as the parent company to Crowd Management Services, allowing the development of additional services apart from operations. Through the consulting enterprise, Starplex continued the drive for innovation in our industry.
In the 1990s, Starplex recognized the need to evolve from a crowd management operator to a provider of innovative guest service programs. After studying with the Disney Institute for three years, Starplex CEO Jimmie DeLoretto designed and developed new policies and procedures dedicated to ensuring positive guest and ambassador experiences.
Starplex spread east and north in 2000. The Montana MetraPark and Montana State University in Bozeman now are served out of a regional office in Billings. Expanding to a fifth state, Starplex CMS took over crowd management and traffic and parking operations at the annual Alaska State Fair.
Nearly three decades later, Starplex CMS, Progard and Starplex Consulting remain locally owned, managed and operated. Starplex ambassadors likewise remain committed to continually earning their reputation as the Northwest’s most exceptional crowd management and guest service organization.
